Public transport services across the country, especially in the main cities, are likely to be disrupted; however, flights should operate as scheduled. Two mass demonstrations are planned on the Athens’ Syntagma Square. The first will take place today, February 6th at 06:00 pm (local time) and the second one will be organised tomorrow morning. Authorities are likely to deploy extra security forces in order to avoid violence. However, clashes between police and protesters are likely to erupt and sporadic acts of vandalism cannot be ruled-out.
Unions are protesting against the austerity measures required by the European Union and the IMF to allow Greece to access to an international financial aid. Over the past years, the country has been forced to adopt several austerity measures to avoid the default and to get the financial support from the international organisations. Greece’s economic situation has created a great social unrest. Demonstrations and strikes, denouncing the poor living conditions and the degradation of the standard of living, are common since 2010.
Travellers are advised to avoid all public gatherings and demonstrations as they might turn violent at short notice. Listen to local and international media in order to get updated information. Stay away from governmental buildings during the strike. Confirm all your travel arrangements.

Air traffic disruptions in France due to strike

Today, Monday, February 6th, several unions of the air transport sector, including the main French pilot union, have started a 4-day strike. Consequently, flight disruptions, including delays and cancellations, cannot be ruled-out across the country. So far this morning, the situation is rather calm at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport where only minor delays are reported. Both international and domestic flights are likely to be affected by this industrial action, which according to unions, could be extended after February 9th.
Unions are protesting against a law proposal forcing each employee planning to strike to give a strike notice at least 48-hours before the beginning of the walkout. The law also plans to force companies to give a traffic forecast 24-hour before the strike. According to unions, this law limits the right to strike in France.
Passengers travelling to and throughout France, or leaving the country, are advised to check their flight status before heading to the airport and to contact their airline for further information.

Italy: Bologna airport temporarily closed

Today, Thursday, February 2nd, the Italian airport of Bologna G. Marconi remains temporarily closed due to extreme weather conditions, including heavy snowfall and gale force winds. However, even if the airport reopens, severe flight disruptions are expected to continue overnight and tomorrow morning, February 3rd. Further spontaneous closures cannot be excluded. Rail and road transport are also severely disrupted due to the cold snap currently affecting Italy. According to forecasters, extreme weather conditions could last until February 10th.

Bus and metro services in the cities of Lisbon and Porto will also be severely affected by the walkout as well as national and international railway operations (delays and cancellations). Street demonstrations are likely in the main cities during the strike and spontaneous roadblocks cannot be ruled-out. Moreover, Transtejo and Soflusa ferry operations will be halted by a rolling three-hour strike on January 30th and on February 2nd. Unions representing air traffic controllers (NAV) are threatening to stage a rolling two-hour strike starting from February 8th to February 12th. If not called-off, this walkout is likely to cause widespread flight disruptions across Portugal.
Unions are protesting against the austerity measures approved recently by authorities in order to fight against Portugal’s public deficit. Portugal is currently facing an economic turmoil and was forced to ask for a loan to international organisations (FMI, European Union). More social unrest is likely.
People travelling to Portugal at these dates are advised to confirm all your travel arrangements and to stay away of all demonstrations as they can turn violent at short notice.

Italy braces for transport strikes

Several Italian trade unions have called for nationwide strikes that will affect both air and ground transportation this week. On Thursday, January 26th, Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) workers will begin a 24-hour strike at 09:00 pm (local time), disrupting rail services across Italy. On January 27th, public transport workers will walkout in several regions, affecting bus, metro and tram services. Moreover, on the same day, Meridiana Fly and Alitalia-CAI flight attendants will stage a 24-hour strike while airport personnel at both Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino and Ciampino airports will stage a 4-hour strike starting from 01:30 pm (local time). These industrial actions are likely to cause transport disruptions across the country.
However, in accordance with the Italian law, a minimum transport service, especially in peak hours, will be provided. Italy is currently facing a difficult economic situation that forced the government to approve new austerity measures to fight against the country’s high public deficit. Further strikes cannot be excluded.
